In the beginning, mankind had to fight
with nature for every inch of living and
crop space. Man, often lost that fight.
As time wore on man learned to coexist
with nature and both were much happier.

Florida was a challenge for man. He learned to drain swamps and channel water away from where he wanted to build. Florida being far more flat than mountainous he had to deal with the rain and stormwater run-off that could easily flood developments and new neighborhoods.

When you view a terrain map of Pinellas County you see hundreds of small and large blue spots. These are retention ponds that receive the huge stormwater runoff we experience each year. Creative city planners, engineers and workers have turned most of these ponds into “lakes” surrounded by beautiful park settings.

We enjoy tracking down many of these lakes to see what man has created. One such spot is today’s destination called Sirmons Lake Park in St. Pete. Nearly a block long and wide, Sirmons Lake is a great example of man and nature coexisting in the middle of a nice neighborhood. No wasted space for a parking area but you will find that people park along the quiet streets on both sides of the lake. (Not on the grass, please.)

Most reviewers describe it as a serene spot to walk your dog, jog or simply sit and watch the many ducks and other birds that call the area home. Fishing is allowed in retention ponds/lakes and the bass fishing here has been called quite good at times. We have also heard that it is another beautiful place to enjoy a sunset.

Though we are against feeding wild creatures, you quickly find that many people do and the ducks of Pinellas County have no qualms about approaching to see what you might have brought for them.

Do you know the difference between a retention and a detention pond? No problem, neither did we until we looked it up. We have both in Florida.
